Article: Finding Strength in Christ

Finding Strength in Christ
Strength is the capacity to withstand great force or pressure. As Christians, we all face trials that stretch us. The real question is: where do we turn for strength? Too often, we try to lean on ourselves, people, or even unhealthy escapes — but true strength comes only from the Lord.
What does the Bible Say About Strength?
Psalm 73:26 says, “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
The Bible consistently reminds us that human strength is limited — but God’s strength is everlasting.
-
Isaiah 40:29: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.”
-
Philippians 4:13: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
-
2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
The Immediate Effect of Strength
When we choose to lean on God’s strength instead of our own, it shifts our perspective. Peace replaces panic. Faith pushes out fear.
David’s life illustrates this well. For years, King Saul chased David in jealousy, forcing him into hiding. Worn down and afraid, David began to seek strength in the wrong places — even aligning himself with the Philistines, Israel’s enemies (1 Samuel 27:1). This choice led him into sin and destruction.
But when David finally turned back to God and found his strength in Him (1 Samuel 30:6), everything changed. His perspective shifted, and he was able to rise again in courage and faith.
The Long-Term Impact of Strength
Choosing God as our strength produces endurance, hope, and character. It not only sustains us in the moment but also shapes who we become over time.
David went from despair to destiny — from hiding in caves to ruling as king. His story shows us that God’s strength doesn’t just get us through trials; it positions us to live out His greater purpose.
On the other hand, turning to false sources of strength leads only to weariness, sin, and emptiness. Just as David nearly fought against his own people, we too risk betraying our values when we rely on the wrong foundations.
Hope in Christ
The good news is that strength in God isn’t something we muster up — it’s something He supplies.
-
Ezekiel 36:27 promises, “I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees.”
-
Jesus Himself modeled strength in surrender, carrying the cross and enduring suffering for our sake (Philippians 2:8).
Through Christ, we are not only forgiven when we fall short, but we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to endure, to stand, and to overcome.
Reflection
- Where am I currently seeking strength apart from God?
- Am I trying to handle things in my own power instead of leaning on His?
- How can I daily remind myself that God is the true source of strength?
Final Thoughts & Prayer
Strength in God is not about avoiding weakness — it’s about knowing where to run when we are weak. Human strength fails, but God’s strength never does.
Let’s pray together:
“Father, thank You that when I am weak, You are strong. Forgive me for the times I’ve turned to other things instead of You. Teach me to trust Your strength above my own. Help me to center my life on You so that my faith does not waver when trials come. I choose to lean on Your everlasting arms. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
