Introduction
One of the most powerful and encouraging reminders comes from the book of James, and it can always seem to meet you at the perfect time, in a season where finding joy in your trials may be difficult.
James 1:2–4 (NLT):
“Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”
In just a few verses, Scripture tells you how to act, why to act that way, and the outcome when you do. Let’s break it down.

Scripture Breakdown
Verse 2 – “When troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy”
This might sound impossible at first. How is finding joy in your trials, weaknesses, heartbreak, sickness, or even in loss possible? Your flesh wants nothing less than to rejoice in those dark and difficult moments — and yet, your spirit is called to.
Human nature makes us want to question God when we find ourselves in less than ideal situations. However, trials aren’t meaningless. Spiritually, they can be lessons, molding, purification, or all of the above. The good times are moments to thank God for His blessings, but the difficult times are just as important because they’re opportunities to trust Him with what you can’t yet see. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit, which means it must be practiced daily. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Diamonds are made under pressure.” This is exactly how the fruit of joy is produced in our lives.
Verse 3 – “When your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow”
When your faith is tested, it stretches your patience. Both are fruits of the Spirit, and both grow stronger when you walk through trials, instead of trying to avoid them.
The real question is this: when you’re under pressure, will you choose to trust Jesus fully, or will you run to the world for comfort? One leads to refuge and peace, the other will always ultimately lead to disappointment. Scripture makes it clear:
Hebrews 11:6 (NLT):
“And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”
God is well pleased with unwavering faith. If any doubts do creep in, take them to Him. He wants to walk alongside you in all facets of life. Continue to pray, meditate on His Word, and let Him reveal Himself to you daily. As your roots in Christ deepen, your endurance is given an opportunity to increase. These verses tell us why it is important for our faith to consistently grow.
Verse 4 – “For when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”
Friend, here’s the promise. First, finding joy in your trials is a command. Then you’re reminded that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And finally, endurance leads to completeness.
When you let perseverance in every circumstance fully develop, you’ll lack nothing. That’s the outcome God promises: wholeness in Him. Perfect and complete.
If you hold up your end — finding joy your trials, exercising your faith, and leaning into patience — your Heavenly Father will uphold His. And everything He offers is worth being part of.

Dear Lord, thank You for filling us with joy in your presence. Finding joy in your trials isn’t easy, but thank You for being our strength. We know that in the midst of any trials or chaos, You alone are our rock and fortress. In the times where we are confused, scared, hurt or hopeless, shower us with your grace and peace, reminding us to take heart, because you have already overcome the world. Lord, as we face tests and trials, we ask that our heart posture is one of faithfulness. Let us not overlook God’s promises throughout Your word. Mature us in patience, wisdom, discernment and joy. Let Your word be a light to our path. We love You, and yet You love us even more. Thank You.
